Rewinding Yarn

Dear users, dear authors,
How can you wind up unraveled yarn so that the ball actually holds together?

When I was a child, my mother showed me how to do it, and that’s how I still do it today: I fold a piece of sturdy paper in half twice so that it’s roughly square, and then I start winding the yarn around it—first in one direction for a while, then shifted by 90°, so that you’re essentially winding “crisscross.” You keep going back and forth like this until you can’t see any edges anymore—then the ball becomes round all on its own.

It gets tricky when you’ve started from the inside of a bobble and then have to unravel a lot of it. (This just happened to me.) I wound the yarn onto a cardboard tube and then placed it in the center of the bobble.
