Could someone tell me what a facing for a neckline is?

Here is the pattern for it:

A facing is essentially an inner copy of the neckline. It’s used to neaten the neckline. It’s mainly used for clothing made from non-stretch fabrics.

It’s usually reinforced with a thin piece of interfacing and sewn right sides together onto the neckline, e.g., of a blouse or tunic. When you then fold the facing inward, iron it, and topstitch it again, the neckline is neatly finished and wrinkle-free ;).

With T-shirts and sweaters, you usually sew on cuffs to finish the edges, which also gathers the neckline a bit. With a facing finish, the neckline stays exactly as it is in the pattern.

I hope I was able to explain this well for beginners :). Feel free to ask again if anything is unclear.

Best regards,
Sonja

A facing, also called a facing piece, is needed at the neckline, armholes, and/or hem to prevent unwanted puckering or waviness there.
Here are a few pictures showing where facings are needed; this is a blazer I sewed for my youngest daughter’s wedding, and there was also a vest, pair of trousers, and skirt to go with it.
The collar should be fused with interfacing, since it should have good body or lie nicely flat, depending on the design. Then the front of the sleeves should also be pressed with a facing so they hang nicely and don’t roll up; the same applies to the top of the back neckline of a jacket or coat. Another place where it’s extremely important to add facings is the armholes on the front and back pieces of a jacket or coat, so that they don’t stretch out and the garment keeps its shape well. You can also add stay tape to skirt and trouser hems, but be careful not to use material that is too stiff, otherwise the hem will stick out unattractively.

Best regards, Inge

For collars and armholes, I like to use iron-on interfacing; if you cut it on the bias, it drapes perfectly around the curves without forming large wrinkles or tearing.

In my current sewing project, I’m dealing with the task of a “facing.” The magazine the pattern comes from isn’t German. But it doesn’t explain what to do with the facing there either. The “facing” is simply included on the pattern sheet. Now I have to figure out how to sew this piece into the V-neckline.

Your tips have helped me a little, but I’ll probably have to watch a few more YouTube videos. It seems there’s no end to the challenges of sewing.

Best regards, Ina
