A facing, also called a facing piece, is needed at the neckline, armholes, and/or hem to prevent unwanted puckering or waviness there.
Here are a few pictures showing where facings are needed; this is a blazer I sewed for my youngest daughter’s wedding, and there was also a vest, pair of trousers, and skirt to go with it.
The collar should be fused with interfacing, since it should have good body or lie nicely flat, depending on the design. Then the front of the sleeves should also be pressed with a facing so they hang nicely and don’t roll up; the same applies to the top of the back neckline of a jacket or coat. Another place where it’s extremely important to add facings is the armholes on the front and back pieces of a jacket or coat, so that they don’t stretch out and the garment keeps its shape well. You can also add stay tape to skirt and trouser hems, but be careful not to use material that is too stiff, otherwise the hem will stick out unattractively.
