Delicious Smoothies

Hi everyone,

now that everything’s growing outside again, we’ve gotten into the habit of having a daily smoothie made with herbs from the garden. So I walk through the garden with my basket and pick “weeds”: arugula, wild garlic, dandelions, daisies, ground elder, stinging nettles, field horsetail, parsley, basil… basically, everything I recognize. I wash it all thoroughly under running water and put it in my blender. I add a few slices of ginger for a little kick, the juice of one lemon for freshness, 1 banana or pear for sweetness, and cold water.

This is what it looks like after 2 minutes of blending—it tastes wonderfully fresh and is healthy.

Are there any other smoothie fans out there? And do you have any favorites?

Soon I’ll be adding fruit from my garden too: strawberries, cherries, raspberries, and later blueberries, blackberries, and plums. That means every smoothie tastes different. But I always have to include some green herbs—otherwise, it’s too much fruit.

Best wishes, Ina

Dear Ina,

your green smoothie would be a big hit with my husband, too! We’re a smoothie-loving family as well, though our tastes differ ;-) Unfortunately, I’m not really a fan of anything with greens. Even though it would be soooo healthy! My favorite smoothie consists of freshly squeezed orange juice, sometimes a bit of grapefruit, kiwi, carrot, grapes, and a slice of banana. Yeah, it’s very sweet, but I think it’s super delicious :-) And at least it has some vitamins in it, too.

Enjoy your energy boost!

Best regards, Sonja

Thanks for the suggestion.
I might make that again sometime.

Oh yes, I love smoothies too—for example, with spinach, dandelion greens, herbs, orache, mint, and stinging nettle, then apple, banana, and orange—and berries later on. I just use whatever’s growing at the moment. Spinach, orache, and even stinging nettles are very mild and blend well with fruit. Mint leaves add a fresh touch. In the summer, that’s often better than eating just anything.

Thanks for the reminder—I could start doing that again, too.

By the way, we also eat—especially in winter—various sprouts that we grow in a sprouting jar. They’re packed with nutrients and taste delicious. For example, cress, broccoli, fenugreek, alfalfa, lentils, and even sunflower seeds and buckwheat. We eat the last two sprouted in our muesli.

Hello everyone,

thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. There are some interesting things in there for me to try, too.
