Ice Saints 2022

how’s the weather where you are? Are you thinking about the Ice Saints?

For me, they’re actually always around in May, because it can sometimes get really cold again, but when I look at the forecast this time, there’s a slight drop in temperature of about 5° from Wednesday to Thursday, from 27° to 22/21°—that’s still manageable ;-):-).
Then in June comes the “sheep cold,” which usually falls between June 4 and June 21. It’s called “sheep cold” because that’s when the sheep are sheared, and when it cools down—which is usually the case—the sheep get cold. But the “sheep cold” usually doesn’t last more than 1–2 days

I’m already keeping an eye on the Ice Saints—I haven’t planted any seedlings or beans yet. I’d rather wait a little longer. The weather is really still too unpredictable—cold, warm, cold—you often don’t know what to wear. 

The Ice Saints rarely have such a drastic impact in Cologne, and this year it’s supposed to be really summery and warm on those days. However, I’ve never had particularly sensitive plants in my window boxes; planting a little earlier has always worked out well for me so far.
The late spring chill is more noticeable here and very unpleasant, especially when the spring leading up to it was already so nice and warm. I always notice the shift from warm to cool very clearly, and I find it more unpleasant than the reverse—when it suddenly gets very warm, I handle that just fine.

I’m planning to plant my home-grown bell pepper seedlings from the warm sunroom out into the open tomorrow. The weather forecast doesn’t actually predict any Frost Saints. Next week, the lowest nighttime temperature is supposed to be 5 degrees, which would still be acceptable. If necessary, I’ll wrap them up overnight.

We’re actually facing more of a drought problem. No rain for weeks, and none in sight. This is definitely going to be another dry summer. I wouldn’t want to be a farmer these days.
