Smoothing out unraveled yarn

How do you smooth out unraveled yarn?
Can frayed yarn still be saved?

Yes, I still remember that my mother used to wet the yarn, then put an upside-down chair on the table and wrap the wet yarn tightly around the legs. Once it was dry, it was wonderfully smooth. Instead of an upside-down chair, you can also use a board, but it takes longer for the yarn to dry that way because air can only reach it from one side.

@Inge, that’s right! I learned that from my grandma, and I still do it that way sometimes when the yarn means a lot to me (and was expensive) :-))

But you can’t really salvage frayed yarn—you just have to cut it off.

I remember that chair trick from my grandma, too. She would also wind the yarn really tightly around it when unraveling.
