Handmade Keychains: How to Improve Durability?

Dear users, dear authors,
How can you improve the durability of handmade keychains / bag charms—for example, prevent the keyring, which may be attached with just a few threads, from breaking off?

Would anyone like to share their thoughts on this? That would be great.

For bag charms, I use those little reinforcements designed for beading projects—you slide a small metal piece over the thread, which protects it from wearing through against the carabiner or key ring.
For thicker wool items, like colorful tassels, I weave in a thin wire that’s also looped around the keyring, then wrap the wool threads over it, and I also wrap the wire around the threads to bundle the tassel together. Finally, I wrap a few color-coordinated threads over it to hide the wire—this lasts forever.

I’ve tried incorporating fishing line into the hanging cord before. That makes it more durable, too.

Or curtain cord—that holds up really well, too

Dental floss works well, too!

For my bag charms and keychains, I generally crochet the “eyelet,” which means a whole foundation chain of chain stitches has to be worn through ;-)

If you don’t like that, you can buy small hand loops. You can get them for next to nothing in packs of 50. You can clip the mini carabiner through the crocheted piece and then attach the nylon loop to your keychain. It holds up pretty well and looks just like something you’d buy :-))
