Patchwork patterns, Patchwork, and Sewing

Dear users, dear authors,
Would you like to share your thoughts on patchwork patterns / patchwork and sewing?

It always depends on what kind of PW (= patchwork) you want to sew and whether you need a pattern or not. For PP (= paper piecing), i.e. sewing on paper, I would ALWAYS prefer to use a pattern. But if I *just* want to sew colorful squares together, a pattern isn’t necessary—anyone can do that on their own. Even for Bargello or a log cabin block, I’d use a pattern as a beginner.
The fact is, patchwork is a ton of fun and it’s soooooooo versatile

What is Bargello / Blockhouse?

And the one above is a kind of Bargello; there are also tons of different ways to make it.
This is, for example, log cabin patchwork.

Josefa, the one at the top, the Bargello, was once a Christmas gift for my youngest daughter; the quilt measures 2.30 m x 2.20 m. Back then, she wanted one like that as a bedspread for her bedroom.

I think that's great.

I discovered patchwork through a sewing class, and I’d recommend that to anyone who wants to learn it “properly.” Using a rotary cutter and a ruler takes practice—I wouldn’t have figured out many of the tricks on my own!

But Akela is right: You can start with small squares or strips of fabric. I now cut my scraps into 10cm x 10cm pieces and save them until I’m ready to sew them together to make things like pillowcases.

There are so many beautiful patchwork patterns. It’s really fun to try them out!
