Stitch markers are used to mark specific points in your work, such as the beginning of a round, places where increases or decreases are made, where pattern repeats begin and end, and so on. When crocheting with fuzzy yarn, they can also be helpful for finding the right stitches (for example, by placing a marker every 10 stitches).
Stitch markers are available in plastic or metal. Personally, however, I prefer to use colored strands of yarn, which I place between the stitches.
Stitch markers are really helpful when you’re working with counted patterns, for example, or when increasing or decreasing while knitting a teddy bear or doll.
I use stitch markers just like Ruth does. The plastic ones are too thick for my liking, but they’re often very helpful for crochet projects because you can hook them onto the work.
I use stitch markers when crocheting pieces together. When making a figure out of African flowers, it’s really helpful to temporarily pin the individual flowers together beforehand. The markers also help connect other items made up of multiple parts without the pieces twisting or shifting out of place.
For this, I use plastic markers because they can be closed.
Well, I like to use these colorful plastic stitch markers. They come in different sizes, though. I prefer the larger ones because the end is thinner and longer—better for my crochet stitches.
I need them when I’m crocheting in spiral rounds, or when I take a break from crocheting—I place the stitch marker in the last stitch.
For example, when I’m crocheting a garment and want to check the fit, I use the stitch marker to pin the two crocheted pieces together, or if I want to create sections, they’re really helpful.
