Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to have a beautiful wedding dress, but I’m still happily married. I’ll admit I’m a fan of the show “Zwischen Tüll und Tränen” (“Between Tulle and Tears”). On that show, ordinary women are transformed into radiant brides with the help of the right wedding dress. Today, I’d know exactly what my wedding dress should look like. Back then, things were difficult after I’d gone through cancer surgery and chemo. For both of us, the most important thing was simply to have been married to each other in this life—after 20 years of living together and raising a family with children. The dress was secondary, and I didn’t even have the strength to get one. Today, I’m happy even without a wedding dress. But since I enjoy watching the wedding dress show, I guess there’s a quiet longing inside me.

Ina, even a beautiful wedding dress is no guarantee that the marriage will last. I had my dream dress in white, and the marriage fell apart after 13 years. The second time I got married, I sewed myself a sky-blue suit and just had a civil ceremony, and it has lasted. We’ve been married for over 30 years now, and we’ve been together for 40 years. Just wanted to add that to what you said, because while the dress is certainly a wonderful part of such a day, my grandma always told me: “Inge, remember one thing: marriages may usually be made in heaven, but they are lived very realistically on earth.” She was so right
