The sets are crocheted using the mini C2C technique. 

All you need is cotton yarn (e.g. the popular Catania) in your desired colors and a suitable crochet hook. Clothespins can make the work and color changes a little easier. 
Everyone surely has a pair of scissors and a sewing needle at home anyway. 

You should know how to crochet chain stitches, slip stitches, and half double crochet stitches—everything else (including the mini C2C technique) is explained.
