I cut, or have always cut, everything myself that I needed and wanted for a quilt. It’s also much more fun that way and you’re more flexible if you change your mind about one thing or another. Before you sew a quilt, you should also think carefully about what kind you’d like to have. For beginners, I would first recommend squares in the same size; that’s easier to handle than, for example, a Bargello, which doesn’t necessarily have rectangles and squares of the same size. Or even a Drunken Path, where the curves really should fit very precisely, otherwise at some point it won’t fit at the back or the front anymore. This Africa quilt was my very first patchwork project, a bedspread for our marriage bed. The squares also had to be quilted, meaning the three layers of the blanket: the top, the backing fabric, and the batting that goes inside. I spent days, or rather weeks, just quilting this blanket.
