Dear users, dear authors,
What are your experiences with working with scrubby yarn? What is scrubby yarn used for? Can it be washed?

Sponge yarn works well with a larger crochet hook. It’s washable up to 60 degrees. Do not use fabric softener.
The finished pieces can be used as bath and dish sponges.

I like to crochet dish sponges out of sponge yarn. It has a slightly scratchy texture. That makes it good for removing dried-on food residue. But the scratchy texture doesn’t bother me when crocheting. As Gabi already mentioned, you can wash the crocheted pieces in the washing machine at 60 degrees. They dry quickly, so bacteria don’t stand a chance. I really like dish sponges made from sponge yarn because, first, you can crochet beautiful, completely unique items, and second, they’re sustainable because they can be used again and again.

A hem or neckline crocheted with sponge yarn also looks very decorative on doll clothes.

@Ruth:
When you use it to crochet a hem or neckline, are you using it as a substitute for lace?

Here’s an example of what I meant.

It’s not lace, more like a fur trim. It looks good.

Hi,
ever since I discovered sponge yarn (Bubble by Rico), I haven’t bought any dish sponges (Sc...Br...) or similar products anymore. You can use it to clean all kinds of surfaces—even delicate ones, like ceramic cooktops, stainless steel sinks... cars, windows with fly...—without leaving any scratches. And I once used my very first dish sponge—one that still had its absorbent backing—to clean a range hood, then washed it at 90° C. Not only did it come out clean, but it also had to tackle all the greasy kitchen upper cabinets afterward. It’s still going strong and now serves as a quince fuzz remover once a year. Showering with the same material saves shower gel and is more pleasant than a sisal glove (which I used to use). It’s also a very popular gift when paired with a bottle of dish soap or shower gel... However, always make sure to point out that it needs to be allowed to drip dry... that’s why it doesn’t smell bad, because neither moisture nor unpleasant odors can linger.

Sponge yarn is really easy to work with; I was worried it would feel stiffer and rougher, but that’s not the case at all.
Here are a few of my cleaning sponges:

It sheds a little, or tiny fibers come off. I made my parents a shower mitt that they only use outside in the garden because they’re afraid it will clog the drain. I haven’t used one myself yet; I’ve only ever crocheted them as gifts for others.

Hmm, I shed more lint in the shower than a sponge ever would—the drain pipe has to handle that too (and so far, it has).

Hi,
I gave a pot scrubber as a Christmas gift—and got a repeat order right away.
I made a back scrubber and an exfoliating glove out of it for my mom.
I definitely have to make one for myself, too.
I think it’s great that it can withstand a 60° wash, especially in the bathroom and kitchen 🤔

@Veronika—that’s how I see it, too 😉

I’ve never crocheted with sponge yarn before.... What you’re saying sounds really interesting—maybe I should see if I can find some here in the store 🤔 because I can’t really buy it online just to try it out; shipping would make it way too expensive....

I’ve never crocheted with it either, but I already have some in my yarn stash. I just had to have it back then because I wanted to try it out. But I keep coming up with new ideas that I want to try right away, so it keeps getting pushed aside.
