Crafting in Hot Weather—How Can You Make It Bearable?

I don’t want to give up knitting or crocheting in the summer either, so I tend to use lighter cotton or linen yarns and knit or crochet in the morning or evening hours when the heat isn’t quite as intense.

However, I still haven’t found a solution for the mosquito attacks when I’d like to continue my crafts on the balcony after dusk....
Maybe I should spread a mosquito net over myself. ;-))

I can always knit or crochet. But for me, it doesn’t really feel hot until it hits 35°—since I’m always cold anyway and still walk around in a jacket or sweater when others are wearing just a T-shirt.

I agree with Michaela’s tip. When it’s really hot, cotton yarns are much easier to work with. Pure acrylic yarns aren’t as easy to work with because your hands sweat more.

On those few really, really hot days last year, I just turned on a fan. And suddenly, knitting went much more smoothly.

well, I’ll even crochet "if necessary" while on vacation at the beach … I really don’t care whether it’s hot or not.
However, when it’s hot, I almost exclusively work on smaller projects and only use 100% cotton or yarn with a viscose content.

Hi everyone,
On hot days, especially around noon and during the hottest hours, I like to sit in the garden and crochet there. With an iced coffee and my feet in cold water, it’s really relaxing. I try to get strenuous things like housework done in the morning whenever possible.
I wish you all relaxing crafting hours in a cool corner when it gets that hot.

Here’s a tip from me for crocheting on sunny days: Avoid putting sunscreen on your hands! Absolutely!

So if you’re putting sunscreen on the kids—and maybe even on yourselves—be sure to wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Preferably several times. Nothing is worse than sunscreen on your hands (even a tiny bit is enough to cause disastrous results).
The crochet hook starts to squeak so badly—it’s absolutely awful. And “gliding through the stitches” is out of the question. Not only does the hook squeak, but it also loses its ability to glide smoothly. This makes crocheting very tiring. It’s especially bad with amigurumi, since you’re already crocheting tightly with those anyway.

My experience is limited to crocheting with pure cotton. I don’t know if the phenomenon mentioned above also applies to other materials. :)

Oh yeah, I know all about the sunscreen thing, too.
It’s especially bad with light-colored yarn, because some creams really can transfer and leave unsightly marks on your crochet project.
I’m all for a cool cup of peppermint tea.
Every now and then, completely dunk yourself in water—either in a pool or in the shower. Preferably in a swimsuit. Yes, I know you’re not supposed to keep things on when they’re wet, BUT I do it anyway.
And it really keeps everything pleasantly “cool” for a while.

So I think with one or two of these tips, you can work quite well even on really hot days.
