It’s a bit like learning vocabulary.
First, you need to familiarize yourself with the various symbols. That’s not always easy, because they aren’t always consistent. A good crochet chart includes a key for this.
It’s also helpful if the beginning is marked and if the rows or rounds are written in different colors.
Then it’s best to work from a pattern that includes both crochet charts and written-out stitches. That way, you can compare them repeatedly and learn to read the charts step by step.
I have to admit, though, that there are some crochet charts I can’t quite figure out either—especially when the yarn has to be reattached several times in different places.
I also think that not all crochet projects are suitable for being represented in crochet charts, such as three-dimensional pieces like amigurumis.
I’m not sure if this belongs here, but I’ll just ask:
What kind of patterns are these when they say “chart for a C2C blanket”?
Is that a crochet chart?
C2C is a crochet pattern consisting of individual squares. It is worked diagonally from corner to corner. Any pixel pattern can be adapted into a C2C pattern. However, the squares in a C2C pattern are quite large, so it’s mainly suitable for blankets.
This isn’t really a crochet chart, but rather a count pattern made up of squares.
Hi Veronika,
that can vary. C2C stands for crocheting from corner to corner.
Some people use the so-called “graphic” as a regular image, like the kind also used for embroidery, and also write out the color combinations row by row. I haven’t quite figured it out myself yet either.
Usually, the pattern just contains numbers and colored boxes.
Personally, the pixel color image is enough for me.
Maybe someone else can explain it to you in more detail.
I did some research online. “Graphic for C2C” isn’t a crochet chart. It shows images with colorful squares.
I’ve also wanted to crochet something using C2C and tried it the way it’s shown in the picture. I was aiming for a bag and designed my pattern with colorful squares. It worked out well for me. I just count a lot and make notes in the margin, like “5 yellow, 3 gray,” etc. Unfortunately, I can’t say how other authors work.
