Crocheting a standing double crochet

Dear users, dear authors,
as far as I know, here’s how it works:
stStb = standing double crochet (1 ch and 1 dc)
What do you use it for? What’s the advantage over a regular double crochet?

This is the first time I’ve heard/read about this.

I came across this for the first time yesterday in a pattern or product description.

A standing double crochet is used when you would otherwise need to work several slip stitches so that the pattern can be counted evenly.
Instead of “4 slip stitches, 3 chain stitches, and 4 double crochets” at the beginning, you work “1 standing double crochet in the 5th stitch, 4 double crochets.”
Before doing this, cut the yarn after the previous round.

Of course, I immediately searched online and learned something new.

I found out that you can use a standing double crochet when changing colors. I really liked that and will definitely give it a try.

I take the new color and chain one stitch. With that stitch, I crochet a double crochet. It sounds simple and looks really nice when changing colors—instead of the usual 3 chain stitches. 

It’s great that we’re learning new things together here.
