As for me, the answer is a resounding no. Sorry, but it’s just not my thing. If you have young kids, I guess you have to do something about it, but I can just sit back and relax—and I’m allowed not to like it.
I’m not really into Halloween either. It’s just a commercial gimmick for candy. But I do like a beautifully carved pumpkin that glows in the evening. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last very
long. That’s always a shame.
At 30, I’m one of the younger ones here, and back in my youth there were already Halloween parties everywhere. So I’m not quite as opposed to it as most others :)
I wouldn’t need it, but I still like the spooky decorations :)
I’m not a fan either. And since we live pretty much on our own here (the village is a good two kilometers away), no one ever comes by to ring our doorbell. So Halloween just passes us by in silence.
If anyone does happen to “stumble upon” us… they’ll turn right back around as soon as they hear our dog 😇
As one of the older folks here, I only got to know it as an adult; the holiday itself doesn’t really mean anything to me, and I don’t need it. I can definitely imagine, though, that kids have fun with it.
I really don’t like the usually gloomy fall, so I think pumpkin decorations, lit-up ghosts, and whatever else are really great.
I do like the origins of Halloween, and subtle pumpkin decorations too—though “back then” (around 1718 during the Potato War), 40 years ago in the fall, we tended to celebrate the harvest festival instead, and there are generally nice fall decorations for that as well ;-)
I find the hype surrounding truly gruesome costumes and masks to be awful. The same goes for the typical American candy. When my kid was even younger, though, we naturally still went door to door; the kid dressed up and was happy with a bag full of candy :-))
I didn’t celebrate Halloween as a child, and it wasn’t a thing when my kids were little either… But in the U.S. and the U.K., it’s been a long-standing tradition.
Here, Halloween wasn’t introduced until after the Gulf War in 1991, which happened to fall right during Carnival season. Nobody really felt like celebrating, and many Carnival parties were canceled. The carnival industry then came up with the idea of promoting Halloween in the fall.
But my grandchildren love it! They decorate the front yard and their windows with spooky figures long before the big night, and they’re as happy as can be when they’re finally allowed to head out on Halloween night to collect candy. (Not that they don’t get any otherwise!) And that’s when I get to contribute some crocheted decorations or sew costumes.
So I’m totally understanding when the neighborhood kids ring my doorbell, and I make sure to have plenty of candy ready.
If it weren’t for my grandson, Halloween would pass me by unnoticed. But he’s crazy about it—probably because of the Halloween-themed vacations in America—and he decorates everything.
So every year, we’re invited to his Halloween party and celebrate with him.
This year, I contributed a pumpkin for the decorations
