Button collection

I’m sure many of you have a button collection, too

I can’t even say when my collection started growing. I often get buttons as gifts, and I’m happy to receive every single one.

Right now, my buttons live in a wooden box

For a short while, they were stored in a large bottle, but the opening was too small, so not all of them fit. And it was hard to find matching pairs that way, too.

When my grandson was little, he used to spend a lot of time sorting through my buttons.

Special buttons—often just single ones

But my favorites are mother-of-pearl buttons—they make my heart skip a beat

Why don’t you show us your button collection?

… I bought up the entire remaining stock when a store went out of business … there’s always something in there that you can use

And sorted into little rolls... yeah, I bet you can always find the right one that way.

What a great collection!

Yes, that nice lady had to give up her shop… Because her mother had become dependent on care, and the whole thing was in Spain… She couldn’t take anything with her and was glad that I took everything off her hands all at once… I’ve regretted it a few times myself… But that’s just how it is now, and who knows what you might be able to make from it all later on—and it wasn’t expensive at all, which was good… Best wishes…. The buttons won’t go bad for another 400 years or so, and by then I won’t care

Ooh my gosh! Petra, that’s amazing!
Have you ever Googled “flower pictures with buttons” online? I can’t post a photo here, but there are such great things out there—though you can only create them if you have a collection like yours.

Wow, you have a wonderfully large button collection. And there are some really great ones in there. It’s great when they’re gifts.

There’s so much you can do with them. As Ursula already mentioned, things like button art. I’ve also seen them crocheted around. You can make little figures out of them using wire, or use them as Christmas decorations (string them all in green from largest to smallest, like a little Christmas tree), make bracelets, necklaces, and cool earrings...Use them as eyes for crocheted figures... as wheels for cars... and so much more

Personally, I really like those vintage glass buttons—they shimmer so beautifully. They come in such gorgeous colors, too. Actually, I’ve always liked glass buttons—ever since I was a kid. My grandma and my mom kept them in a box in their sewing boxes, and I used to love playing with them as a child.

Inspired by my grandma, I also collect every button I find. By now, I have several boxes full of them. When my middle son was a little rascal, he used to play with the buttons for hours and then pack everything back up neatly. My other two children were never interested in buttons.
A year ago, I got another little box of very old buttons from a house clearance.

Wowww, you have some amazing treasures! I have a few of those too, but not nearly as many. I’d never use them all up anyway. The idea that kids enjoy sorting them—that might be right up my 5-year-old granddaughter’s alley. She’s currently making beaded necklaces with great patience. When she comes over again, I’ll ask her if she’d like to try sorting them.

I’ve sorted my buttons into storage bins, so I never have to search for long when I need a specific button. My husband ordered these bins from his electronics store, since they’re normally used to store resistors, capacitors, and the like.

Best regards, Inge

I just searched online for pictures of buttons. So many great ideas.

Even simple crafts to do with kids: crocheted buttons, picture frames, flower pots.

Just looking at all the pictures is wonderful and brings me joy. Thanks for the tip
