Crocheting an LED hat?

Hi everyone,

my daughter just started school. For fall/winter, I’m looking for a hat with a removable LED light on the front for her walk to school. It would be great if I could crochet it myself, but I haven’t found any patterns yet, and I’m not skilled enough to figure out how to do it without one :-(

Does anyone have any ideas—or even better, a pattern (I’d be happy to buy one, too)?
Thanks in advance.

Good morning, of course I immediately had a look around the vast reaches of the web to see what something like this looks like. The LEDs are embedded in a square and attached to the hat.

What about buying this LED? Is it just a single LED, or does it already come enclosed in a square?

If it already comes enclosed in a square, I’d crochet a completely normal hat. Then, for the LED, crochet a small square as the base, then work one or two rows upward without increasing (I don’t know the height of the LED), place the LED inside, and secure it by decreasing over the next 2 rows. I’d attach the whole thing to the hat with a snap fastener.

This is just my idea for how to make it work if the LED is packaged in a square like the ready-made hats online.

If you already have an LED like that at home, maybe you could photograph it and post a picture here, then it would be easier to imagine. (But I’m not exactly sure about that; you might need to get in touch with Josefa. ) I only know glow yarn for hats and those glow strips you can sew on.

I don’t have any LEDs yet. It was just an initial idea. Maybe I’ll try using glow-in-the-dark yarn first :-)

Have you ever thought about the fact that these LEDs only flash when connected to a power source? Where would you put the rechargeable battery or the regular battery then?
I’d sew reflective strips around the edge of the hat—first of all, it’s lighter, and second, it’s not as prone to failure as this LED setup

Best regards, Inge

You can buy those kinds of LEDs for hats on Amazon. Then you can crochet a regular hat and attach the LED to the front.
