Casting On for Crochet/Knitting: Any Tips?

When crocheting, you often start with a foundation chain. But it isn’t elastic and can hardly be stretched. As a result, the piece often pulls in at the bottom. It’s better to use a foundation single crochet start, because it is elastic:

Crochet 2 chain stitches, then pull the yarn through the 1st chain stitch (2 loops on the hook), yarn over again and pull through one loop (this then forms the foundation loop), and then yarn over again and pull through both loops. The next stitch is made by inserting your hook into the foundation loop, pulling the yarn through, crocheting the next foundation loop
and then finishing the actual stitch. The foundation single crochet start is also needed when you have to increase several stitches at the end of a row.
