Batik: How Is It Done?

Do you like batik? Do you have any tips and tricks for it?

Does anyone else want to say something about batik?

I don’t know exactly how it works, but my daughters did it at camp last year, and all the T-shirts that had red in them turned completely purple—not a trace of batik. Something went wrong there, but what?

I use fabric dye from the drugstore (don’t forget the salt!). I tie knots in the fabric I want to dye: for jeans, I tie knots in the legs—several of them. For shirts, tie knots in the sleeves; you can also roll up the top part and twist it inside itself so it’s really secure. This works better with thinner fabrics.

Then, following the dye instructions, put it in the washing machine or a bucket to dye. It’s always worked for me :).
