Flood pants are back in style

Dear users, dear authors,
Flood pants are back in style, but they’ve been rebranded as ankle-baring pants or cropped pants. Are you joining in with this trend?

My first question about pants like these is always: didn’t the fabric go all the way down? :-)))) I think these pants are awful—and always have. Either 7/8, knee-length, or just properly long pants.

Best, Inge

What’s the difference between 7/8-length and ankle-baring?

With 7/8 pants, or capri pants, the hem sits about mid-calf to just below the end of the calf muscle. High-waters end directly above the ankle, with the trouser hem there. In my opinion, that always looks like it was meant to be stylish but just misses the mark.

Best regards, Inge

But it’s in. Showing your ankles is in right now, even in winter.

Sure, it’s in style, but do we have to jump on every fad the fashion world comes up with? I don’t think so—thank goodness we have the freedom to choose. Like so many things, it’s a matter of taste; just because a few girls on Instagram think something is chic doesn’t mean it has to be, in my opinion.

Best regards, Inge

And one more thing, Josefa: Unfortunately, it was already like this when the miniskirt came out in the ’60s—the ones who had the figure for it rarely wore it back then; instead, it was worn by girls with legs like tree trunks and butts as big as half of Bamberg, as we say here. The older folks here will know what I’m talking about—I even got to enjoy that sight in person.
It’s exactly the same with these *too-short trousers*—because to be able to wear something like that, you need to have the figure and, above all, the legs for it. Otherwise, it really doesn’t look very nice.
I know I might be judging a bit harshly here, but that’s just how I feel, #
because
I’m different than people assume and rarely what they expect!
But certainly not how others would like me to be!!

Best regards, Inge

Well, everyone can wear whatever they like. As long as people feel comfortable in them, that’s fine.

I’m pretty tall, so my pants are often too short. It used to look silly, but now it’s just fashionable ;-)

I, on the other hand, am quite short, so I rarely have pants that are too short :-)

I’m 150 cm tall. Either the pants are too long or they’re flood pants.

It’s perfect for me, since I don’t have to shorten these pants myself.

…since I was already pretty tall as a 13-year-old, I always had to sew about 10–15 cm of fabric onto my jeans to make them long enough. I now wear jeans in length 34, so I can actually buy pants. But I still hate that “high-water” feeling to this day!!! So this new
(awful) trend will go on without me😂…..nothing’s off-limits, so to everyone else: go for it!!!!

If I’d known that back in the ’80s, I would have started a new fashion trend. I’m very tall, and back then, pants were awful—and today? My daughter only comes home wearing pants like that, and she’s taller than I am. If you look at all the young people today, they’re all wearing pants like that. They’re neither one thing nor the other.
I need a 34-inch inseam in jeans; I think everyone who’s older avoids shorter pants.

It’s also quite amusing to see how the trend changes.

I only wear what I like.... Always tailored to my “weight.” 🙈
As a young woman, standing 165 cm tall and weighing just under 55 kg, I wore a lot of different things—though most people didn’t think everything looked good on me. I used to walk around a lot in tight pants and really long boots... I had to put up with all kinds of comments, but a few years later that style became trendy, and all the “moms” who’d previously gossiped about it ended up buying those boots for their 13- to 14-year-old kids… because they were “in.”
A few years later, I’d gained quite a few kilos, so I needed different clothes—not just a few sizes bigger, no, completely different—and today, 20 kg lighter, I need yet another set of clothes.... So there’s never a dull moment in my closet—I just find it hard to find things that suit me. When I go shopping and see the same thing 25 times over, just in different shades, I don’t even need to go in there...
Otherwise, I have to agree with Inge. There are certain items of clothing that shouldn’t be manufactured beyond a certain size. Of course, everyone should be happy with what they wear, but every now and then we should also think of others who might feel “bothered”....
In any case, I don’t need those pants.
Best regards, Steffi

I’m one of the tall ones, too. Even as a kid, it was awful having to walk around in cropped pants and then get teased. My mom, with four kids, didn’t care about that sort of thing.
In any case, even today I make sure my pants are always long enough—I couldn’t care less about fashion trends. When it’s hot, I’ll sometimes wear pants that go past the knee.
But as you say, to each their own :-)

Generally speaking, I don’t like these pants at all. I prefer them long, 3/4-length, or short.

However, since I need a foot-lift orthosis (not always) to walk due to a medical condition, these pants are actually very practical. The ankle area—where the orthosis needs to go—is left open, and I can more easily tighten the elastic strap attached to my shoes when needed.
