Sewing a Swimsuit: What Do You Need to Keep in Mind?

If you want to sew a swimsuit, what do you need to keep in mind? What fabric is best for this?

There are special fabrics for swimsuits and swim trunks. If you want to sew your own swimsuit, you should use a very good, well-fitting pattern so that the swimsuit fits well afterward. You should also use power fabric for the bust area—this is an elastic fabric that’s also used in corsets and bras—after all, you want to look your best in a swimsuit.
I’ve sewn a few myself; it’s actually not that hard. It’s important to have an elastic stitch on your sewing machine; I prefer to use the triple zigzag stitch—it holds well and gives a little where needed without tearing.

Oh, Inge, I’m always so impressed by everything you can do! You’re practically a walking sewing encyclopedia :-) It would never have occurred to me that you could even sew your own swimsuit. That’s really awesome!

@a-mano —yes, I’m sometimes amazed myself that I still remember what I once learned so well. There are some things I haven’t sewn in ages, but it’s really true: once you’ve learned something, you can recall it when you need to. Okay, there are some things I have to look up again first, but that’s why I’ve kept my reference books. After my apprenticeship, I took a course in sewing lingerie where they showed us how to make our own bras—I’ve actually done that before. But after my many surgeries, my body changed, so I bought some from a specialty store that provided good support and held everything in place.
With a lot of things, you just have to dare to give it a try—my teacher always used to say to us, “It can’t get any worse than it already is” :-)
