Hi, I decided to try making this top, but I only had regular knitting yarn at home—the kind I usually use to crochet baby booties. It’s 100% acrylic, as far as I can remember. Won’t this be too warm for summer? Do I need to use cotton yarn? But cotton is pretty stiff and doesn’t drape well. Plus, I’ve had bad experiences with it before—it just bled color! Could I safely use, say, pink and white together? Won’t the white turn pink after washing?
Also, the yarn needs to be thick enough that I can crochet with a size 5 hook—what do you think? Anything else would be too thin, and I’d have to crochet forever, plus the cup size wouldn’t fit right. So it should drape softly, not itch against the skin, and you shouldn’t get overheated :)) What kind of yarn do I need, and how many grams do you think I’ll need? I think it’s too revealing—I couldn’t wear it myself—but would something like this actually sell?
I’m a bit at a loss right now. Let’s say I need 100 g of yarn for a size 5 hook, and I have thinner yarn, say size 3. Would I still need 100 g?
Thanks, everyone

How else am I supposed to show your photo where the problem is visible if I’m not allowed to post links? I don’t see a function here in the forum to upload images—just “Image/Image”—and that’s where you’re supposed to put the link
If you want to upload pictures, please click on the image icon; there you’ll find an “Upload Image” button. You can use that to upload pictures, but please only upload your own images.
Good luck.
I removed the picture above because I wasn’t sure if it was yours or not. When in doubt, I have to take it down.
If it is yours, then you can upload it as a regular image—please don’t use a link.
Please be patient with the replies. With this beautiful weather, people aren’t necessarily on their computers or smartphones all day.
Wasn’t that some kind of bikini top in the picture?
Acrylic yarn is definitely not for me for a summer top. Maybe a blended yarn.
Every now and then I come across yarn that bleeds color while crocheting or knitting, but that’s pretty rare. I don’t think you can generally say that about cotton yarn.
As for the hook size, I can definitely imagine Catania yarn working very well for a bikini top like that—with a small cup size, for example. I’ve never crocheted anything like that before (except, it feels like, 100 years ago for my baby doll). I’d just try it out and see what you like best.
As for the amount of yarn, it depends on the yardage. 100 grams can be 80 meters or even 330 meters. The amount you’ll need for your top depends on that—and, of course, on the size. And regarding your question about thin yarn and crocheting forever: live by the motto “The journey is the destination”—the longer you crochet on a project, the longer you’ll enjoy it and have fun.
I hope this helps. Why not just try out different yarns to see which one feels most comfortable to wear?
