How do I calculate yarn quantities for amigurumi?

I have a crochet pattern for an amigurumi. It calls for 100 g of yarn with a length of 100 m per 50 g and a 3.5 needle.
I still have a 50g skein with a length of 125m. If I were to crochet with a 2.5mm hook (or better yet, a 2.0mm?), would my 50g skein be enough? Or would I also need 200m of the thinner yarn?

I can’t help with the calculations right now, but I think with thinner yarn and a smaller crochet hook, the yarn might be enough.
If it’s a small amigurumi, definitely. I crochet a lot with 50g/125m yarn—you can even make a small doll with it. Without clothes.

I guess I’ll just have to try and see if it’s enough. The pattern calls for 100g of the specified yarn for the little horse. That would be 200m. But maybe I’ll only need a small portion of the second ball. I can’t contact the author—otherwise I wouldn’t have this problem. It would just be annoying if I got to the bottom and realized I didn’t have enough yarn left for the legs... ;-)

There are also two-colored little horses. Maybe you could switch to a second color toward the end if you notice you’re running low. 

That’s a great idea! I wanted to use up my leftover yarn. Unfortunately, I only have one unopened skein of white yarn, which I’d use to crochet the little horse. I also have half a skein of black left. Other than that, I only have colored yarns. Maybe I could use the black for the mane. Or I’d have to alternate between black and white in each round. Then I’d end up with a zebra. But that wouldn’t need a bridle or a saddle ;-)
