The difference lies in the type of yarn and the needle used.
The thinner the yarn, the finer the knit = fine knit.

The thicker the yarn, the coarser the knit.
Lace patterns are only possible with very thin yarn = fine knit; otherwise, they don’t look right.
On the other hand, textured patterns look better with thicker yarn.
