Christmas in a Shoebox

Hi everyone,
I know Christmas just passed! But when you hear why I’m writing this, you’ll understand!
Maybe some of you are already familiar with the “Christmas in a Shoebox” campaign. It involves packing shoeboxes with toys, candy, and often scarves, hats, and gloves—even fingerless ones—because in some countries, children sit in unheated classrooms during the winter. You can dress warmly anywhere—as long as you have clothes—but not on your hands. It’s hard or even impossible to write with gloves on. But you can with fingerless gloves.
For several years now, I’ve been knitting and crocheting things for this campaign whenever I have a spare moment. There are collection points where you can drop off the finished items by the end of October or early November. They can certainly be colorful and made from scraps. Kids usually like colorful things!
My idea was to get as many people as possible involved in crafting and donating to this good cause. I’m sure there are collection points near you, too. You can definitely find information online! Otherwise, I’d be happy to check with my organization!

I don’t know if it’s the same thing, but it really reminds me of the “Geschenk mit Herz” campaign. There’s a set list of what should go in the shoebox—items like hats, scarves, etc., are part of it. So you can’t just pack a gift consisting solely of clothing—you have to include other items as well. I always participate in this campaign; I either put together a package myself or, if I don’t get around to it at all, I donate money so that a package can be put together.

We’ve been participating for 9 years!
It’s a wonderful initiative—not just for the children receiving the gifts, but also for the children (in our area, collections are organized through schools, among other places) who help pack the packages!
