Knitting a pattern with a different needle size and yarn—how do I convert it?

Hi everyone,

this is a pattern I found online. 9 mm needles, gauge: 9 sts x 12 rows.
But I want to knit it with 6 mm needles and a different type of yarn. Gauge: 21 sts x 26 rows.

  So I downloaded one of those knitting calculators and entered that I need 35 sts for the original yarn—how many do I need with my yarn? It says 38 sts, but that can’t be right.

I could cry. I just want to knit a top-down raglan cardigan with the yarn I already have.

Do you have any ideas? 

You can calculate this using the rule of three:
Original yarn:
9 sts = 10 cm,
1 st = 10 ÷ 9 cm
35 sts = 10 ÷ 9 × 35 cm = 39 cm

So you want to knit a width of 39 cm with your yarn.
21 sts = 10 cm
2.1 sts = 1 cm
2.1 × 39 = 82 sts = 39 cm
So you need to cast on 82 sts.

Well, if only we’d known back in school just how much we’d need math for 😄
