Dear users, dear authors,
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a swaddle sack for babies?

I’ve always felt that babies are calmer and more content in a swaddle bag than when they’re just lying in their cribs. Swaddling reminds babies of their time in the womb, where it was always very snug and cozy for them.
For my youngest granddaughter, a friend made this embroidery file for me (I didn’t have an embroidery machine back then), and I sewed a swaddle bag from it. My granddaughter is now already 10 1/2 years old.

That’s such a cute swaddle bag, Inge.

I feel the same way. Babies generally feel very comfortable in a swaddle bag. My son always slept in a sleeping bag and didn’t want a blanket.

If I remember correctly (my son is 14 now), a sleep sack was also recommended because it prevents children from pulling a blanket over their heads (which could be dangerous) and because it keeps them from kicking off the covers (which could leave them cold). We always had sleep sacks with sleeves in different thicknesses, depending on the season.

With a swaddling bag, the baby is completely wrapped up, without any freedom of movement.
It may sound a bit cruel to some, but it really isn’t.
As has already been written, it reminds babies of the womb, and that’s why they feel very comfortable in it.

I can’t think of any disadvantage right now, except that some babies may not like it... And that you shouldn’t do it for too long. As soon as the baby can roll over, swaddling time is over. A normal sleeping bag is still fine after that. But no more swaddling bag :)

I actually wrapped my daughters in flannelette cloths some of the time, at least for the first 6–7 weeks, because I can’t remember these little swaddle bags being around here in the late ’60s.
The older members here will remember that too

Best regards, Inge

Anton always thought swaddling bags were a pain. They just led to nothing but crying. He always preferred regular sleeping bags (but only the sleeveless ones).
