do you have any great salt dough creations you’d like to share here?

Um, Josefa, you’re scaring me 😂. Can you see into the future? Anton and I just finished making some salt dough crafts. Now we just have to let them dry.

No, I’m not psychic, but it’s nice that you and Anton are having fun with salt dough. Are you going to paint them afterwards?

I think so. But I’m letting them air-dry, and that takes a few days… but then we’ll get started

Hey there,

Josefa can really read minds. I had that same idea just recently.

I used to work with Keramofix a lot—salt dough would be a good alternative—but how long does it take to dry? I once read somewhere that it takes 1–2 days—is that right?

Your creations already look great!

Don’t like drying them in the oven?

You can also do it in the oven ... it really depends on how thick they are.

I put them in the boiler room for a few days and then see how they are 🙂

There’s a pretty good chance I’ll forget about the oven 😀

@Bastelfan,
it’s great that you’re joining in too. :-)

@Arni,
I’ve heard that too, that salt dough pieces of varying thickness are better air-dried.

Okay, I’ll keep that in mind.
But first, I still have some other projects to finish.

Have a nice afternoon!

Over 30 years ago, when my children were still little, I made gift tags for Christmas parcels out of salt dough with them. We dried them in the oven and then painted them. On the back, we glued a little label with the recipient’s name. We still have these tags today, and we reuse them every year.
.
A few of the tags have broken over the years, and since the family has grown in the meantime, I’ve decided to make a few new ones this year.

Hi everyone,

we used to do a lot of salt dough crafts back in the day.
Little trees with apples on them, bouquets of flowers, dogs, people, name tags...
Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of them.
We used tools like skewers, garlic presses, etc., and we made some amazing works of art (even the ones we kids made—my mom’s were great anyway).

I really need to do this with the kids when I have some free time… but right now, there’s no time for anything…

This was our project during the first lockdown in April 2020.
My 5-year-old daughter had a blast with it—I highly recommend it 👍

Hi Josefa,

Thank you so much for the idea. We still have to stay at home a bit longer.  I think we’ll make some Easter decorations out of salt dough on Monday. 😃

Hi Josefa,
I just made some salt dough tonight. I keep it wrapped in plastic wrap, so it’s perfect for crafts. I’d like to make an Easter bunny tomorrow. Let’s see if it turns out the way I imagine it will.

@Arni and @Petra-Rabe2,
will we get to see pictures when your creations are finished?

Decades ago, I made Christmas and Easter decorations out of salt dough. We then sold them at a market for a good cause. Mine is already pretty dirty—it’s always hanging in the kitchen—but I don’t want to throw it away.

Is anyone seeing my post twice?
I first posted it from my phone, but the next day when I checked on my computer, it wasn’t there anymore.
So I posted it again from my computer. I can see the post here.
But on my phone, I see both posts???
I’m confused.

There’s another salt dough thread: https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/forum/topic/41584/salzteig

That’s where your other post is.

There are two salt dough threads. In each one, I can see Santa Claus once. 😃

Thanks for the thread!

I haven’t done anything with salt dough in ages (the last time was when I was a kid), so I don’t have any pictures. But you’ve given me a great idea for Easter decorations—thanks :)

I’ll show you the finished pieces when the time comes :)

Hi Josefa,
I’ll post a picture of my finished piece.
It’ll just take a little while, though, because I’m letting it air-dry—I incorporated a plastic bottle into it.
To speed things up a bit, I just used a heat gun for a little while.
The Easter bunny should be finished by Saturday, and then I’ll post the picture.

Hmm 🤔 Salt dough—I think I did some crafts with the kids at preschool about 20 years ago… that was a long time ago. But it’s a really good idea. Thanks, Josefa, for the thread… even though my husband will definitely look at me with more than a little confusion if I start doing this too.
To dry them, I could strike a compromise between using the oven and air-drying and just put them in the “cat compartment” of the stove? You know, the warming compartment of the wood-burning stove… we call it the “cat compartment.” Our last stove was a bit bigger than the current one, and in the old one, my cat always slept in the warming compartment—she wouldn’t be dissuaded from it…

How will you paint the salt dough? In other words, what colors will you use? I can’t wait to see your creations

2 Easter eggs, 3 tea light holders, and a monster. 😃

I won’t be painting them because of the stones. I’ll just apply a clear coat.

I like your pendants. It’s a lovely idea that I’ll think about for a while.

Anton’s monster turned out well. Is he going to paint it too?

My creations are still a work in progress. I prefer to take my time so they can dry thoroughly before I continue working on them. But I can already show you the beginning😊😉

Hello everyone,
my little bunny is taking a bit of time.
Working with salt dough and letting it air-dry takes a while.
Each applied layer needs to dry thoroughly.
The inside is a bottle, but at low temperatures I could put it in the oven.
But I don’t want to put it in the oven, because it would have to bake for 2 to 3 hours.

Here I’m showing you my progress, but it will still take a while until it’s finished.

I almost forgot to show you our creations :)

Leo got to do everything himself: kneading the dough, cutting out shapes, and painting them.

...I really do need to practice holding back on some things. Painting the blue carrot actually hurt a little... but oh well :D

The best part was that one butterfly. “Come on, Leo, let’s paint this butterfly in bright colors!”
It turned out to be... a cheerful black with a slight brown sheen :D

Grandparents will be delighted at Easter🍬🐰🌺. Believe me, no matter what the colors are, they’ll be proudly displayed.

Blue carrots? Why not?
That’s just imagination. I think it’s great.
And when it’s hanging on the Easter tree, everyone will admire it.
It’s one of a kind, and not everyone has something like that.

After all, there are blue potatoes—I’m sure someone’s already growing blue carrots, too. I think they’re great. :)

Purple carrots actually exist.
Try searching for them on Google. Google has images.

I thought it was just a figment of my imagination—but why not?
I just checked Google,
and yes, there are purple carrots, and on Chefkoch.de you can even find recipes with blue carrots.

He really does love to cook.
Either with Mom or Dad in the big kitchen (though that’s starting to get a little too dangerous for me, because he wants to do everything himself, including cutting and handling the hot pan :D) or in his own kids’ kitchen.
He’s just not quite there yet when it comes to cleaning up the kitchen.
There’s a pile of stuff in there :D

I think the blue/purple carrots are interesting!
I’ll have to look for some later—maybe I’ll find some :)

That’s what I’m saying, Michelin-starred chef… and they have staff to clean up afterward. :-)

Are you done with the whole salt dough project, or are you still working on it?
