Covers for bowls

Since I wasn’t entirely satisfied with my waxed cloths, I discovered some homemade covers online this week for keeping food fresh.

I have mountains of fabric at home, so I quickly found an old pink tablecloth and some leftover rose-patterned fabric from when I was sewing face masks. It was sewn up in no time, and I’m very happy with it.

I also made a cover for my oval casserole dish out of an old pajama top. Now the rest of our casserole is safely stored in the fridge until tomorrow.

This means there’s no longer any room for aluminum foil or plastic wrap in my kitchen.

Dear Petra,

that’s a great idea! Do you think the fabric alone is enough to keep everything fresh? After all, beeswax does serve a purpose. I’d be very interested to hear about your experience with this, because it would, of course, be much easier and faster than making beeswax wraps.

Best regards

What a great idea... Goodbye, plastic! ...Thanks for the tip

@Annika = The fabric of the tablecloth is very sturdy, and the beeswax wraps I’ve used so far didn’t really fit snugly around the bowl, no matter how long I warmed them up with my hands. I must have made a mistake when making the wraps. The covers can’t be any more breathable than my beeswax wraps.

But I’ve also seen that some people have used shower curtains as a second layer of fabric or a waxed tablecloth. I didn’t have either of those on hand for my experiment, though. If there are any fairs again, I’ll go looking for fabric like that.

Thanks, Petra, for sharing this brilliant idea. It’s really simple, and every household has fabric scraps lying around.

I’d also be interested to hear about your experiences. But I already think that if the fabric is thick enough, this could work well.

Dear Petra,
Thank you so much for sharing and showing us this idea. Anything that helps combat the flood of plastic is welcome in my book. You just have to come up with the idea and give it a try. Your lids look really pretty. It’s almost a shame that you mostly only see them when you look in the fridge. But I don’t need to copy this right now because I have casserole dishes with lids.
Best regards, Ina

Coated cotton works very well for these lids—it’s washable yet waterproof.

A while back, a friend gave me a bunch of glass bowls in various sizes. They do come with plastic lids, but I think this alternative is great. Everything is tightly sealed and stays fresh longer that way. The lids are, of course, reusable and very sturdy.

But if you don’t have those, the fabric alternative is absolutely fantastic.
