Sewing and Lining a Jacket

Dear users, dear authors,
do you have any tips and tricks on sewing and lining jackets?

I sew the jacket and the lining separately and then usually bag them out, but for that you need a turning opening in one of the lining side seams. I sew the sleeves on right away too, then pull them through the jacket sleeves and either attach a cuff at the sleeve edge, or I leave a turning opening in one of the sleeves and bag out the sleeve that way. Then the lining and jacket are flush at the sleeve edge, so it’s better to topstitch there again about presser-foot width, so neither the jacket rolls inward nor the lining outward.

What do you do with the turning opening then?

I either sew it closed with the sewing machine or by hand using a mattress stitch. Once everything is sewn up *neatly and in order*, it’s easy to sew it closed there—that way, you always have access in case you need to make adjustments, like making it tighter, wider, or shorter.

When you put it that way, it sounds so easy. :-)

Josefa, that’s how I was taught during my training, so it’s easy for me, but there are also things where I get stuck and ask myself, “What do I do now?” For example, I can’t knit patterns—I really lack the creative thinking required for that. My oldest daughter learned it from my mom and laughs her head off every time I fumble around trying to do it. I’m just glad I can knit and purl, and that gets you pretty far, after all.
