Counting Patterns for Filet Crochet

Hi, everyone. Does anyone perhaps have a “reading technique” for these filet patterns with empty squares and X’s? I find it hard to follow, and I keep losing my place in the rows.

You can place a ruler under the line for the row you’re currently crocheting. That makes it easier to stay on the right row.
Or you can cross out the completed rows and cover them with a sheet of paper.

I prefer to place the ruler over the row I’m crocheting, so I can still see what the previous row looks like … as a guide.
I have my knitting or crochet chart on a metal plate, and I can attach a strip of thin cardboard to it with a magnet. That strip then moves up a little, row by row...

The deluxe version is the most convenient: a magnetic board with a matching ruler (it doesn’t slip as easily as a regular ruler—I even use it while traveling by train—in normal times, of course!). By the way, I also place the ruler over the row I’m working on…
I also use the board when crocheting or knitting shawls with different patterns and when doing double-face knitting.
