Crochet piece is slanting

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a baby blanket with a beautiful pattern. Unfortunately, my crochet piece is turning out crooked.

The number of stitches always stays the same, and the pattern is very regular.

In the round with the double crochet, I make 3 edge stitches (chain stitches) that aren’t crocheted. On the wrong side row, which is worked in single crochet, there’s only one turning chain, which I also leave unworked.

Can any of you help me figure out why it’s turning out crooked, or is this just part of the pattern?

Thank you so much :)

Hi si-fu,

It all looks nicely and neatly crocheted. I don’t think it’s because of the pattern. Once the blanket is finished, it will be “washed” and laid flat to dry. At that point, you should make sure it has perfectly straight edges. What still looks a bit warped while you’re crocheting will be shaped into the correct form while it’s damp. And once the blanket is dry, it will stay that way.

Sometimes, the better you know the pattern by heart, the looser your crocheting becomes—and that would show up as the top rows getting wider and wider. You’ll just have to check for yourself to see if that could be the reason.

I hope you continue to enjoy crocheting and wish you the best of luck.

Warm regards, Ina

Hi Ina,

thank you so much for the info.

I actually measured everything again, and both the top and bottom rows are exactly the same size. The individual patterns are also pretty much identical in terms of size.

But I’ll definitely take your tip about soaking it and pulling it tight into account. Maybe it’ll look better afterward.

In the end, there’ll be a wider border around the pattern anyway, so that should help too.

I hope you have a wonderful second Sunday of Advent.

Greetings from Stuttgart,
Simone

Hello,

I think it’s because of the pattern, or rather because the stitches may lean more due to the taller stitches.
For example, with a granny crocheted in rounds, the stitches also shift because the double crochets always lean very slightly to the left.
But I also think it will straighten out when blocked.

Warm regards and have a lovely second Sunday of Advent

Hi Simone,
I can only agree with the two “experts.” When blocking, it’s important to have enough pins and to pin the edges perfectly straight. Otherwise, you’ll end up with little zigzags along the edge.
Best regards
Petra
