Dear users, dear authors,
Do you have any tips on sewing for beginners?

It really depends on what you want to sew and what your priorities are when it comes to sewing. If someone is only interested in patchwork, they’ll need to know and be able to do different things than when sewing clothes. To start with, if I were looking to buy a sewing machine, I’d go to a specialty store and get personal advice—and there you can also test out a machine or two. I always say the machine “speaks” to you, so listen carefully. For a beginner, I wouldn’t exactly recommend an expensive “professional machine,” but rather one in the mid-price range, because it should be capable of quite a bit. Then you should look into the other essentials, because a sewing machine alone isn’t enough—there’s more to it than that. A good pair of cutting shears—and by that I don’t mean ones from the hardware store, but ones from a specialty shop. In the long run, it pays off to have a good pair; I myself have a whole basket full of shears, plus a seam ripper, because that’ll become your best friend while sewing ;-) :-) Sewing thread, a good measuring tape, pins, and maybe a cutting mat.
For total sewing beginners, I have a great tip—our teacher taught it to us, too: first, place a blank sheet of paper under the machine and practice sewing without thread, etc. That way, you’ll get a feel for the machine. Draw circles, arcs, and so on, and sew them—only then would I recommend moving on to fabric. Start with something simple—that way, you’re guaranteed a sense of accomplishment. A simple fabric shopping bag or a gym bag for the kids. Then try a pillow, and from there you can *work your way up*—because many people make the mistake of buying a sewing machine and expecting it to do everything, only to be completely surprised by all the details involved. Remember, there’s a reason it’s a profession that requires up to 3 1/2 years of training. There are plenty of tutorials online where you can find help and tips for sewing.
To all sewing beginners: enjoy this hobby—it really is a wonderful one.

In addition to the recommendations above, I’d like to add that for your very first attempts, it’s a good idea to use old clothes, bedding, etc.—or old pillowcases—since it doesn’t matter if you mess up. These are great for testing, for example, how different materials behave, whether you might need to adjust the thread tension, and when an elastic seam makes sense. You can also figure out what the machine’s limits are.

Oh, and having a supply of various needles is also pretty helpful.
The occasional one is bound to get lost along the way, and it’s a bummer when you don’t have a new one on hand.
A good pair of scissors (which you should NEVER use to cut paper!!!) is truly worth its weight in gold.
And tailor’s chalk… for light-colored fabrics, a very soft pencil works quite well, too.
I found a roll of packing paper very helpful; I traced a well-fitting, simple shirt onto it. This gave me a better understanding of the correct size for a sewing pattern, such as whether the neckline of a store-bought sewing pattern would roughly match my preferences later on...
Otherwise: just get started and experiment.
