Wow, I’ve been due for that for a good 50 years now :-) ;-) Because ever since I was about 19 or 20, I haven’t followed any fashion dictates—I’ve just gone with my own sense of style. Okay, with some things you just can’t avoid them—especially when you sew your own clothes, you’re always somewhat subject to the spirit of the times in fashion, if only because there just aren’t any other fabrics or fabric designs available. But when it comes to the design, I’m back in control. I love timeless, simple, elegant fashion, and I also have to work with my rather broad and somewhat crooked figure—which is another reason why trends just don’t work for me, since they go against everything that suits me and appeals to me. I’ve often noticed that by the time a so-called trend has long since gone out of style, I suddenly have a piece like that hanging in my closet, tailored just for me—how on earth did that get there? ;-) :-) ;-) :-)
I feel exactly the same way as Akela. I don’t like to follow just any trend or style that’s currently in vogue. It hasn’t been quite 50 years yet, but it’s getting close.
Often, I just don’t like current fashion, and ever since I started designing my own clothes, I’ve been doing my own thing. There are clothes that I really love, and I sometimes wear them for years (I’m not really supposed to say that in public, am I?).
Most of my favorite pieces—I almost can’t say this out loud—are from the last century! The other theater and concertgoers don’t have to look at my outfit, but I have to feel comfortable in it! And last summer, there wasn’t really any occasion to dress up anyway, so I didn’t need any new clothes. The last dress I bought—a little black dress—has been hanging in my closet for a few years now. Actually, I really like not running around in jeans and a T-shirt for a change, but I don’t need the latest fashion craze for that. I’d rather knit myself a new shirt or crochet a great scarf!
I totally agree with you guys :)—trends aside, you should feel comfortable in your clothes, and not every trend suits everyone.
I prefer a sporty, practical style, and that’s how my wardrobe is put together, haha...
You can treat yourself to a new piece every now and then, but I, too, tend to wear my clothes until they’re worn out.
As for colors, if something goes with the rest of my wardrobe, I’ll occasionally check out what’s currently “in” and buy something to mix and match. I also prioritize quality over quantity,
