Seam allowance

Would you like to share your thoughts on the topic of seam allowance?

I usually leave a seam allowance of about one presser foot width—that’s enough for me. Seam allowance refers to the extra fabric added when cutting out the fabric so that you can sew the garment, or whatever you’re making, in the desired size. For some pieces, as I do it, it’s specified as just one presser foot width, but there are also seam allowances of 1.5 cm—though in my opinion, that’s a waste of fabric. A presser foot’s width is usually 0.75 cm; the seam allowance is the portion of fabric between the sewn seam and the cut edge.

I prefer patterns where the seam allowance is already included. That way, I can cut the fabric exactly to size and just need to stitch a foot’s width from the edge. 

If you have a great sewing pattern but it’s one size too big for you, don’t worry—you can still use it. You’ll just need to cut the fabric without a seam allowance and then sew presser-foot width,
