Cutting Mat for Crafts

What cutting mat do you use for crafts?

I use large cutting mats measuring 60 x 45 cm. One of them—the ArtCut2—isn’t quite as smooth or clean anymore after 15 years of heavy use, so I mostly use it for rough cuts and other less precise work; the other one—from Mayco—is what I use now when I need to work cleanly and accurately. It seems to be of the same quality as the first one; we’ll see if it lasts me just as long.

I have quite a few cutting mats on my work table, since I’m always cutting fabric with a rotary cutter. I buy my cutting mats at specialty stores for sewing and such—I prefer self-healing mats.

What are self-healing mats?

With self-healing mats, the cuts made by the rotary cutter close up on their own, and the surface looks like new—but this only works if you don’t always cut in the same spot. This is to prevent fine, thin fabrics from getting caught on the cut edges and threads from being pulled.

Wow, what a great invention.

I’m currently using these green cutting mats from PRYM, 45 × 30 cm. I mainly use them just for making my cards, so I only cut paper on them.
The scale markings are usually just printed on, which wear off quickly, but other than that, I’m happy with them.
When stringing beads, I can use it to measure my thread length, as well as the diameter of buttons or beads.
I also used to have this black cutting mat from Panduro, which had the centimeter markings further subdivided. However, it became illegible due to wear and tear, and I haven’t been able to find another mat with that specific layout yet. It’s a shame, really.
