Double Crochet in a Chain Stitch

Hi everyone,

I have a silly question. 😉🤔
I’ve been crocheting for a really long time and quite a bit, but I’m still facing a problem.
So far, I’ve always tried to avoid it as much as possible. 🙄

Is there a trick for easily crocheting a double crochet or single crochet into a chain stitch?
I always fumble around with it and use a pen or needle to widen the chain stitch so I can get the hook in.

Does anyone know an easier way to do this? 🤔🤗

Thanks, everyone! 🙃

Hugs, Becky

I’ve never had a problem with this before, but maybe you’re crocheting the chain stitches too tightly. In that case, it helps to use a crochet hook that’s 1–2 sizes larger. That will make the chain stitches looser.

Hello

Thanks, that's a good idea 👍🏼
I'll try that right away

I do feel like I crochet loosely, but crocheting into the ch is a pain every time

I also don’t like crocheting into chain stitches. That’s why I just crochet “around the chain stitch.” It makes only a tiny difference visually, but it makes my work so much easier :-)

I always have this problem when I start by crocheting a foundation chain and then the first row...
Most of the time, I just end up crocheting into the back loop. Anything else takes forever, or it twists, or it just looks “silly.” If the chain stitches are in the row, I crochet around them too...

Hi Becky,
Do you mean the foundation chain?
Have you checked the HELP section here in the forum yet?
The double chain foundation is explained there. Maybe that’s an option for you, too?

Double chain stitch cast-on...
I’m so glad this forum exists—I didn’t know about it yet either. I’ll check it out right away 👍

For the foundation chain, I just use a larger crochet hook and work
around the chain stitch in the row.
