Carpet yarn???? Has anyone here ever worked with this before?

While “tidying up” today, I came across a big cone of carpet yarn... 1600 g, light gray, a bit “tweed-like” and scratchy....
No idea why it’s in my stash...
Does anyone have any ideas what I could knit or crochet with it...
  Unfortunately, there’s no information about the yarn on the cone...
I knitted a swatch using size 3 needles. Will the yarn get “softer” after washing?

just for fun, I actually knitted a short-sleeved raglan shirt from one of these white cones, and I wear it with pride. My husband said, “You’re crazy.” It looks great. Unfortunately, it didn’t get any softer, but it doesn’t scratch the skin either. So let your imagination run wild and have fun.

Then the cone might have a chance of becoming a cardigan... I wouldn’t be wearing that directly against my skin.... 
Or maybe I’ll actually just knit “simple” mats for the cats; with that amount of yarn, that would be quite a lot 😂

I need something he can fit into more - some kind of sleeping bag or nest....
But what he likes best is lying on the pattern, whether it’s a magazine, a book, or just a printout from the printer - as long as it "crinkles" when he "kneads"... Oh, and craft baskets too... sometimes I have no idea how he manages to fit in there...
