Dear users, dear designers,
is a braiding disc comparable to a knitting spool, or not really?

A knotting star is a disc (usually made of wood) with several notches cut into it. Various (preferably colorful) threads are placed into these notches, leaving one notch empty. Then the knotting star is rotated, taking a thread out of its notch and placing it into the empty notch. By repeatedly moving the threads, they become intertwined, allowing you to make colorful friendship bracelets or thin cords.

With a knitting dolly, you make knitted cords that are significantly thicker than the cords made with a knotting star, since they are actually knitted. This tool consists of a kind of tube (usually made of wood) with 4–8 hooks attached to the upper end, around which a strand of yarn is wrapped. A knitting needle is then used to pull the yarn over a loop on each hook.

Both devices can be used to make cords, but the methods are quite different. The knitted cords are also much thicker. Both methods are relatively time-consuming, which is why mechanical knitting dollies are now available—with these, you simply turn a crank.

As an introduction to crafts, the knotting star is better suited for younger children because it’s easier to learn. However, the cords made with a knitting dolly offer more versatility for crafts.
