As an alternative, you can cut old stretchy T-shirts into narrow strips (1.5–2 cm) and give the ends a good
tug. The stretch should be across the width.
If you want to sew masks, these strips will work just fine.

There was a line outside the fabric store here yesterday that stretched forever....
Zpaghetti yarn—or, as the previous commenter wrote, strips from old T-shirts—works great. They’re much easier to sew on because you can pull them open flat, making it easier to sew over them with the machine, and the rest just rolls back into a round shape.

I finally got lucky again at my wholesaler and managed to “snag” some 5mm elastic… (and even at the wholesaler, elastic is in short supply and, due to high demand, more expensive than usual)…
