Potholders are probably the classic choice for crochet beginners. But there are some really great designs out there—especially here on CP!—that don’t look like beginner projects at all.

Something where you just have to work single crochet stitches back and forth.

As Ruth says, for example, pot holders.
Alternatively, headbands, scarves,... :)
