Help, I’m a total beginner...

Hi, I just started crocheting and bought a pattern for a triangular shawl. Well, I’m a little embarrassed, and I think a lot of you are rolling your eyes because my question is so simple... 

The pattern says:

"5 sc (from the second stitch from the hook)" 

What exactly does “from the hook” mean?

Can someone explain this to me?

(Sorry, I’m really a total beginner.)

You’ve probably crocheted a chain of chain stitches, and now you’re working back along the row, skipping the first chain stitch—so you insert the hook into the second chain stitch and work 1 single crochet into each of the next 5 stitches.
