Crocheting a top with RVO

Hello, dear crocheters,
I need your help. I’d like to make an RVO top with a granny square pattern using half double crochet, with a 3.5 mm hook. To do this, I made 120 stitches with a chainless foundation and joined them with a slip stitch.
I divided them up as follows: 2 x 18 stitches each for the sleeves
and 2 x 42 stitches each for the front and back. In the first corner I made 2 ch (turning chains for one hdc)
2 hdc, 2 ch, 3 hdc into the same chain (starting chain), 1 ch
then up to the next corner: skip 1 st, 3 hdc, 1 ch; next corner: 3 hdc, 2 ch, 3 hdc, 1 ch
then again skip 1 st, 3 hdc, 1 ch; end of Round 1: 1 ch and 1 sl st into the 2nd starting chain. Can I do it this way?
