Help: Do you need turning chains when crocheting in the round?

Dear forum!
I need your help. I’m crocheting a top with sleeves, all in one piece, so without any edges. The pattern says I should crochet turning chains. Aren’t those only used to prevent crooked edges...? Do I have to make turning chains even when I’m crocheting in the round without any edges? Thanks for your feedback, best regards, Sandra

There are several ways to crochet in rounds. 

You actually only crochet WITHOUT turning or starting chain stitches in spiral rounds. 

For tops or clothing, you crochet in closed rounds, which are usually closed with a slip stitch and begin with turning chain stitches :-)
