Dear users, dear designers,
do you have any tips for casting on stitches in knitting?

To distribute the stitches on a set of double-pointed needles, there is a great post here on Crazy Patterns in the blog by Traudelina that helped me a lot. https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/blog/971/maschenanschlag-mit-dem-nadelspiel-trick

I knit the stitches on instead of casting on.

There are various videos about this on YouTube.

I also often use the cast-on method described by Creat Owl. I use a needle one size larger than the one I’m knitting with, as this results in a fairly tight first row. The advantage of this method is that you only need a relatively short starting strand. With the standard cross cast-on, many people have the problem that the starting strand is either too short or much too long.

Here’s a step-by-step guide with pictures:
Place 1 chain stitch on the left needle.
Insert the right needle as if to knit, pick up the yarn, and pull it through; place the new loop on the left needle and pull it tight.
You now have 2 stitches on the needle.
Insert the right needle into the new stitch as if to knit, pick up the yarn, and place the new stitch back onto the left needle.....

I only use the cast-on method these days, mainly because it creates a loose edge. Yes, and I always use a larger needle for it. That’s what’s worked best for me.
