☞ Question of the Week: Do you buy or sell at the Christmas market?

Dear readers, dear authors,
what would Christmas or the Advent season be without the Christmas market? Of course, it’s not exactly warm at the Christmas market, but that’s what mulled wine or non-alcoholic hot drinks are for. And of course, there’s always delicious food to enjoy.
Plus, there are plenty of handmade treasures to admire.
So here’s my question: Who enjoys buying handmade crafts at the Christmas market? And who among you also sells there?

Not me anymore. I haven’t had any positive experiences there so far. Most people just go to drink mulled wine and eat sausages. People do often browse because they have time, but they don’t buy much. In the end, I actually lost money on it, and I don’t even want to think about all the work that went into it. But I also think there are regional differences. I’m from a rural area. A lot of people there crochet too. It’s probably different in the city.

I’ve had a booth at the market before. But it’s just as MyBatzi described. People look at the handmade items, but then don’t buy them—either because they’re too expensive or because they make them themselves. They’re happy to spend money on a third glass of mulled wine, but a pair of hand-knitted socks for 15 euros is too expensive. The effort you put into it just isn’t worth it.

Now I only make a few hats and scarves, which I then make available to our ski club for the Christmas market.

Of course, I still enjoy going to the Christmas market myself. I always try to buy something from stalls that offer handmade items. When you do a lot of handicrafts yourself, you know how much work goes into them. Since I live in the countryside, the Christmas markets here aren’t very big and are mostly organized by local clubs.

The Christmas market is often much too chilly to enjoy

I spent the whole week at a Christmas market—not outdoors, though, but at the university hospital. It was great—nice people, good sales—and I’ll be back there for Easter.

This is my first time selling at a Christmas market.
I’m offering loop scarves, scarves, arm warmers, hats, peaked caps, and bobble hats.

Unfortunately, the crowds are unavoidable.
But that’s good for sales. ;-)
