Braided Bag Handles

Does this sound familiar? You’ve finished crocheting your bag, but you still need handles.
I make three strands using the knitting mill, then braid them into a plait. Now my question is, how do I attach these handles to the bag without them coming undone in the end? If you know what I mean. Does anyone have a trick? Thanks in advance.

Hi Andrea,

I would crochet two round patches (circles) for each handle using the same yarn you used for the bag.

Take one patch and sew the three ends of your knitting mill cord onto it. This will be the inside of the patch, so to speak. Then crochet the patch onto the outside of the bag with the right side facing out. This way, the seam disappears between the bag and the patch, and the cord comes out at the top. Do this on both sides of the bag, so the handle comes out between the patches at the front and back.

If you crochet the patches on neatly, you won’t see that—or will barely see it—on the inside of the bag later. If you do, you could attach matching patches on the inside of the bag.

I’ve also pulled cords like this through pre-made holes, tied them in knots—sewn the knots in place—then frayed the remaining ends and threaded beads onto them.
