Crocheting a table runner

Hello,
I’d like to place a sort of table runner on top of an existing tablecloth, right in the center. The tablecloth is a sort of off-white with a very subtle pattern. I’d like to add a splash of color that would match the tableware. It’s very delicate, with a floral pattern and little birds. Of course, I need to base the colors on the porcelain, which means more pastel shades—nothing too bright. What crochet technique would work best for this? I’m leaning toward using a thinner hook and thinner yarn. This is the first table runner I’ve ever tried to make, so I don’t have much experience with this kind of project. Maybe someone could help me out with some tips?

What do you think of a crocheted table band? I made a whole bunch of them a long time ago and gave them away as gifts. They’re also crocheted with fine yarn and then laid lengthwise over the table. This way, they create a delicate accent that doesn’t dominate and yet still catches the eye. You can decide on the length yourself, and at the end, depending on your table decor, you can thread a colored ribbon or satin ribbon through it.
