How can you soften scratchy wool?

You can make real wool softer by soaking it in lanolin. The lanolin makes the wool a little less scratchy. However, you can’t expect merino-like softness from coarse virgin wool, such as that from Welsh Black-Nosed sheep, since the individual fibers of different sheep breeds vary in thickness.
